Camilo Villegas Wins the 2010 Honda Classic

Mar 07, 2010 - 06:22 PM

Camilo Villegas shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s, including a final-round 2-under 68 to win the Honda Classic by five shots for his third career PGA TOUR title. Camilo finished at 13-under 267, the lowest 72-hole score since the event moved to PGA National in 2007, and four shots better than the winning total a year ago.

Camilo didn’t even play a practice round at PGA National this week. After finishing tied for eighth at last week's Phoenix Open, Villegas headed back to his native Colombia on Monday for a sponsor dinner, youth clinic and pre-tournament party to help open the Nationwide Tour’s Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open, the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in South America.

Wow, I love my cobra S-2 Driver. my wife got it for me over the weekend for Fathers day. I drove the par 4 -280 green for the first time at my club. Amazing Amazing Amazing. I love the sound as well. I did not think anything would get me Cobra S-91 or L5v out of my bag But this Driver is fantastic. I love Cobra and am glad I made the switch from T.M.

Camillo and Ian are great Ambassadors for the product. We neeed to Fowler to sign up now

I love the cobra s2 driver! There is no question whether cobra is the best or not. Before I had the s2, I was very scared to hit my driver, because I never knew where the ball was gonna go. But when I wouldn’t use my driver, I didn’t have near as much distace. When I decided it was time to get a new driver, I went to golf galaxy and I tried everything but I would always get the same results that I already had. I almost just gave up, but the guy next to me suggested the cobra s2. I tried it and bought it. That same night I went to the driving range with my driver that I already had and the s2. I hit the s2 about a 120 times and I was amazed, I was hitting the ball far and straight. So to make sure I wasn’t just having an amazing day, I hit my other driver about 60 times and they were all horrible. To get to my point, I added 50 yards onto my drive and they were always straight! I don’t know how you guys do it, but keep doing it! I also have a question, is there going to be an s3?

Both Camilo and J.B. Holmes have been with Cobra ever since they started playing on the PGA Tour.

Camilo is one of my favorite golfers along with the rest of the cobra guys.  my question is, have any of them been with other clubmakers before signing with Cobra. and an added note, i love your drivers and pro baffler hybrid! Cant wait to see what comes after the S2 series!

It was purely a personal choice. Camilo liked out mesh fitted cap and decided to give it a go for this year. (You can learn more about that cap here: http://www.cobragolf.com/hats/details.asp?id=41 )

Any particular reason that Camilo’s not sporting the military style cap this year?

Thanks for the kind words, Steven. We’re glad the new clubs are working so well for you. As for the Cobra S2 Forged on Tour,  JB Holmes is playing it for his 3 iron. He likes the forgiveness it gives him.

Are any of the tour pros playing the S2 Forged irons? I’m a 9 handicap who’s always preferred “player’s irons.” I bought these sticks two months ago and have shot five rounds in a row at about half my handicap. LOVE these irons, very surprised I haven’t seen them in play yet! Keep up the great work Cobra!

It’s impossible to say how much, but taking the chrome finish off your irons will certainly affect the swing weight. Some people really like that look, but there is a good chance you will need to do other modifications to get the swing back to where you want it.

Sorry - you’d probably need to contact Redbull on that one. Cobra doesn’t have anything to do with Camilo’s Redbull connection.

awesome, thanks!  i know when camilo was first on with cobra staff he used the ss forged irons but they were raw.  i have a set and i want to do this, is it possible or will the swing weight be so messed up that its not worth it?
thanks

CB irons are conforming and have been so since 2007.

are the cobra cb irons conforming on the pga tour this year or did camilo have to start using a new conforming pro cb set at the beginning of the year?

Cobra Golf

Yes, Camilo’s driver is 1” shorter than the stock S9-1 Pro S driver.  Shortening the length of any club has different results from one player to another - so it depends on many different variables - swings, clubhead speed, club type, etc.  Generally, a shorter club allows for more accuracy.  For Camilo, his swing speed is so fast that 1/4” off his irons probably doesn’t affect performance drastically, but the length is more of a comfort/preference for him.  We can check with our Tour team though to see if there’s anything special that went into that length.

Yes, Camilo plays the Pro CB 5-PW and a 24 degree hybrid.  Tour players, like amateurs, replace long irons with hybrids for a variety of reasons.  They could be looking different performance - maybe a high trajectory or more distance.  Or it could be a preference - that they’re more comfortable with a hybrid than a long iron.

Yes, Tour players get custom fit for all their equipment and the majority will have custom lengths instead of gripping down.  Changing the length typically changes the swingweight so there are several ways to make sure the swingweight is correct.
