Captures Season-Opening Mercedes-Benz Championship with New King Cobra S9-1 Driver
Carlsbad, California (January 12, 2009) – Cobra Brand Ambassador Geoff Ogilvy burst out of the gates at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course and outclassed an elite field of 2008 PGA Tour champions to win the first event of the 2009 PGA Tour season, the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Championship. Ogilvy took the outright lead on the 14th hole of the opening round and never trailed the remainder of the tournament. He birdied four straight holes on the back nine and posted a final round 5-under 68 for a 24-under 268 total, six shots clear of his closest competitors.
It was the fifth PGA Tour victory for Ogilvy, who earned his place in the 33-man field with his victory at the 2008 WGC –CA Championship. Ogilvy boasts a U.S. Open title (2006) as well as a second WGC crown (2006 Accenture Match Play Championship). In December, Ogilvy also recorded his first win in his native Australia with his victory at The Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship.
Among the equipment trusted by Ogilvy for his success in Hawaii is the New King Cobra S9-1 Pro D (9.5) driver, King Cobra X-Speed (15.0) fairway metal, King Cobra Pro MB (3-9) irons and a King Cobra Pro CB 2-iron. His S9-1 Pro D Driver helped Ogilvy to hit 45 out of a possible 60 fairways (75%). The new S9-1 Driver line will be available through golf retailers in early February.
Cobra Brand Ambassadors Camilo Villegas and J.B. Holmes also exhibited some strong play in the first tournament of the season. Villegas, whose equipment included a Cobra L4V (9.0) driver, Speed LD F (3 and 5) fairway metals, King Cobra Pro CB (5-9) irons and a Carbon CB 3-iron, finished in a tie for 12th place at 12-under 280. Villegas qualified for the Mercedes-Benz Championship by capturing last year’s BMW Championship and TOUR Championship, the final two FedEx Playoff events.
J.B. Holmes, who earned a spot in this week’s field by capturing last year’s FBR Open, relied upon his King Cobra L4V (8.0) driver to top the field in driving distance with a 297.4 yard average.
The win at Kapalua elevates Geoff Ogilvy to No. 6 in the Official World Golf Rankings, a position worthy of his game.
A stellar performance from an impressive player…and business as usual for a brand focused on developing innovative, high performance golf clubs.

As players gaze down the fairway from the first tee of the Plantation Course at Kapalua, they see the breath taking views and daunting slopes of the golf course and know it's a privilege to play here as a PGA Tour winner. What a great way to celebrate the start of the PGA Tour season!
